The Ministry of Water and Power will discuss demand and supply of electricity for the coming winter season with Wapda and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) here on Wednesday.

Water and Power Minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi will preside over the meeting and review the performance of GENCOs, generation capacity, closure of plants of public and private producers for maintenance and the total generation during next season.

Sources said that there will be a shortfall in the hydel power generation and the main focus will be on thermal power generation during the winter season.

Both GENCOs and IPPS also shut down their plants for annual maintenance in these days. Due to the reasons mentioned above, Wapda forecast shortage in the season. The ministry has asked Wapda to improve the performance of GENCOs, and said the shutdown plan for maintenance should be for minimum time. The units should be closed turn by turn.

Sources also said the minister will also ask the IPPs to minimise their maintenance schedule and there should be no closure of units in the same time.

The government will assure them to resolve their problems, if they have and ask to produce maximum power in winter season.

An official of the ministry stated that Liaquat Ali Jatoi, who is against the load management due to these reasons, asked Wapda to formulate a comprehensive plan to meet the demand in the coming days.

The minister is of the view that there should be no concept of load shedding and the people should get uninterrupted power supply in all seasons.

The meeting will take important decision regarding load management for next six months, the sources added.
